HudsonAlpha Discovery’s expertise focuses on high-throughput sequencing, workflow optimization, and developing cutting-edge analytical pipelines.  The Sr. Director, Laboratory - Genomics contributes to our mission by being responsible for daily supervision of a high throughput NGS laboratory including: Oversight of laboratory and sequencing associates, testing processes, reviewing lab results, developing and writing operational procedures, monitoring laboratory key performance indicators, quality metrics and the QC program, and providing regulatory, due diligence and internal auditing support. The successful candidate will have experience working in a CLIA and CAP laboratory and be able to apply regulation to laboratory operations, overseeing all operations in the HudsonAlpha Discovery Laboratory. the Sr. Director will work closely with the management team to develop and implement organizational policies, practices, and operating goals to improve performance, methods and quality of all products.  In addition, the Sr. Director will work with the sales organization on customer acquisition and with project managers to secure flawless execution of customer projects.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure HudsonAlpha Discovery Lab runs efficiently and effectively
  • Utilize laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve overall laboratory operational issues
  • Interface with customers in the project acquisition phase and the project execution phase
  • Interact with all levels of internal and external sources to resolve problems
  • Maintain staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees and contract personnel
  • Accomplish staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees
  • Develop, coordinate, and enforce systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards
  • Ensure appropriate lab compliance with institutional and accrediting agency regulations
  • Determine and provide appropriate supplies for laboratory personnel
  • Oversee purchasing, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Collaborate with Quality to ensure laboratory meets quality standards: create SOPs for laboratory operations; respond to non-conformances, develop Corrective Action/Preventative Actions
  • Coordinate laboratory educational activities
  • Perform custom protocols for clients according to customized SOPs
  • Monitor laboratory safety procedures and equipment
  • Provide technical guidance, resources, and support to employees and management of the company to include Clinical Sites, Project Management, Feasibility and Shipping/Receiving
  • Follow company policies and procedures, including quality, safety and/or universal precautions
  • Serve as backup for Laboratory personnel when needed
  • Track work and progress in specified Data Management Tools
  • Respect the privacy of the personal information of patients, co-workers, and all individuals with whom the Company interacts
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations applicable to the Company and its operations

 

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • PhD in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical, or life Sciences desired; meets requirements for High Complexity Laboratory Director under CLIA/CAP desired
  • 5-7 years of laboratory experience to include Next Generation Sequencing and molecular testing
  • 5+ years managerial experience
  • Strong business acumen
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize assignments and resolve multiple complex problems simultaneously
  • Excellent computer skills to include Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Docs. com experience is desirable but not required
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures
  • Strong understanding of RNA/DNA analysis, gene synthesis, library preparation, QC, data analysis, gel electrophoresis, and/or characterization of primary cells, Sanger and Next-Generation Sequencing
  • Ability to communicate with peer level managers to resolve issues that impact multiple departments
  • Previous work experience in a College of American Pathologists or Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments-certified facility preferred
  • Working knowledge of universal precautions, bloodborne pathogens, and handling human specimens
  • Extensive knowledge of HIPAA and medical privacy policies
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and or weekends
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

Work Environment and Physical Requirements (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions):

This job is performed in a laboratory environment. Prolonged standing may be involved when performing laboratory tasks. A variety of laboratory equipment is used, including manual and automated pipette, fragment analyzers, liquid handling robotic equipment, microfluidic lab-on-a-chip platforms (Caliper and Agilent machine), mass spectrometer, thermocycler, PicoGreen, Qubit, plate readers, Next Gen Sequencers. The equipment used may be noisy at times.  Employee is exposed to extreme cold, with temperatures up to -190 degrees Celsius.  Work requires the ability to see and handle objects on a repetitive basis.  Work involves lifting or moving objects frequently which weigh up to 25 pounds. Work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals and may involve contact with infectious diseases.  The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including lab coats, safety glasses and gloves may be required when performing certain operations.  When handling liquid nitrogen, PPE includes face shields, cryogenic insulated aprons and gloves.  Duties require the ability to communicate clearly with internal or external contacts, either verbally or in writing.

Your role:

  • You are responsible for the reference analysis of tissue samples from international, clinical pivotal studies, pharmaceuticals, and companion diagnostics (H&E, IHC, ISH, genomics applications) and for the result documentation within the quality standards GCP and US-CAP
  • You design and develop novel approaches for establishment and validation of innovative tissue biomarkers based on H&E, IHC, ISH, genomics and proteomics applications, including digital pathology algorithms
  • You act as a trainer of the Discovery Biomarker Academy
  • You lead an international team of pathologists and support supervision and delegation of tasks to internal and external pathologists
  • You represent Discovery Life Sciences within international, scientific project-teams and -meetings, at conferences
  • As part of a cross-functional global development team, you represent our company towards external experts and organizations

Your requirements:

  • You are a medical doctor with a specialization in Pathology (board certification, “Facharzt/Fachärztin”) with expert knowledge and broad experience in tumor-and molecular pathology
  • You have an academic background with interest in new predictive tumor biomarkers, teaching and publishing
  • You have sound medical and scientific leadership skills to drive high-priority projects in collaboration with global matrix teams and external partners.
  • You have an agile and effective working style in a fast-paced and changing environment. Good project management skills and the ability to work in virtual teams as well as fluency in English with very good communication and presentation competencies are part of your profile.

  • Working in a regulated environment (GCP)

  • Preparation and follow-up of internal and external audits / monitoring visits
  • Participation in the establishment and validation of new assays

Your requirements:

  • Successful completion of one of the following educations: BTA, MTA, CTA or biology laboratory assistant.
  • Knowledge of histology, tumor biology and immunology are an advantage
  • First work experience in the above-mentioned area of responsibility

The Associate General Counsel – Employment (Europe) contributes to our mission by driving and supporting the Company’s adherence to applicable legal and regulatory requirements as well as Company policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, analyze and provide verbal and written pragmatic advice on a wide range of employment-related issues relevant for our European jurisdictions, which may include human resource issues, labor relationship, employee-leave matters, employee benefits legal and compliance matters, employment-related grievances, and policy compliance
  • Advise Human Resources management and other business representatives (including senior management) on a day-to-day basis on a variety of highly confidential and time sensitive information; work with business clients to resolve employment-related issues, including personnel decisions, leave and accommodation requests, investigations, employee mobility requests and related formalities/documents required, legal requirements, and best practices
  • Advise the Human Resources Team on employment issues and claims; support and/or lead employee-related investigations when required; manage external legal counsel when retained

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as an in-house attorney within a commercial, for-profit company operating in multiple jurisdictions, focusing on employment-related legal support and acting as a partner to the Human Resources and business clients; deep knowledge of and experience with Germany labor laws is required; practical experience interacting with Works Councils is a plus
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop solutions and recommendations and facilitate process changes, quickly and accurately
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability and willingness to interact with employees and non-employees at all levels to ascertain information, relay information, resolve conflict, establish rapport, remain courteous, influence decisions, clarify capabilities and propose solutions
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and stay on task in a fast-paced work environment, managing varying legal demands across numerous subject areas
  • Demonstrated business acumen, including the ability to see the “big picture” in a cross-border context, as well as the relationships between detailed and specific legal and business issues
  • Language requirements: Excellent English and German language skills, both spoken and written

Location:

This position is based in Germany. Some travel may be required.
